Keeping your dog's vaccinations current is one of the most important and cost-effective preventive health measures available. Vaccines protect against potentially fatal infectious diseases, many of which remain threats in the environment even for dogs with limited outdoor exposure. The Dog Vaccination Schedule Calculator generates a personalized vaccination timeline based on your dog's age, previous vaccine history, and lifestyle, following American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) guidelines.

Core vs. Non-Core Vaccines

Use the table below to compare Core vs. Non-Core Vaccines.

CategoryDefinitionExamplesWho Needs Them
Core vaccinesRecommended for all dogs regardless of lifestyleDHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza), RabiesEvery dog
Non-core vaccinesRecommended based on lifestyle and geographic riskBordetella, Leptospirosis, Lyme, Canine influenza, Rattlesnake toxoidDogs with specific risk factors

Core Vaccine Schedule: Puppies

Use the table below to compare Core Vaccine Schedule: Puppies.

AgeVaccinesNotes
6-8 weeksDHPP (first dose)Begin series; maternal antibody interference possible before 6 weeks
10-12 weeksDHPP (second dose)3-4 week interval from first dose
14-16 weeksDHPP (third dose) + RabiesDHPP series complete; Rabies 1 per local law requirement
12-16 monthsDHPP booster + Rabies boosterFirst adult boosters; Rabies valid 1 year initially in most jurisdictions
Every 1-3 years thereafterDHPP (every 3 years after initial boosters) + Rabies (1-year or 3-year product)After 1-year Rabies, switch to 3-year product for subsequent boosters

Non-Core Vaccine Recommendations

Use the table below to compare Non-Core Vaccine Recommendations.

VaccineRecommended ForScheduleDuration of Immunity
Bordetella (kennel cough)All dogs using boarding, grooming, dog parks, daycareInitial: 2 doses or 1 intranasal; booster annually or every 6 months for high-exposure dogs6-12 months
LeptospirosisDogs with outdoor exposure, standing water, wildlife contact, or flood-prone areas2-dose initial series, 3-4 weeks apart; annual booster1 year - annual required
Lyme diseaseDogs in tick-endemic regions (Northeast, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic US)2-dose initial series; annual booster1 year - annual required
Canine influenza (H3N2/H3N8)Dogs in daycare, boarding, shows, shelters2-dose initial series; annual booster1 year
Rattlesnake toxoid (Crotalus atrox)Dogs in rattlesnake-endemic areas with outdoor exposureAnnual before snake season1 year; reduces severity but does not replace antivenom

Titer Testing: An Alternative to Routine Boosters

Vaccine titer testing measures circulating antibody levels for specific diseases (typically Distemper and Parvovirus). Dogs with adequate titers are considered protected and may not need booster vaccines for those diseases in a given year. Titer testing is increasingly accepted by boarding facilities and is philosophically preferred by owners wanting to minimize unnecessary vaccinations.

Titer TestCostAcceptable Protective LevelNotes
In-house titer test (Vaccicheck)$50-80Positive result = adequate protectionPoint-of-care; results in minutes; Distemper and Parvovirus
Laboratory titer (Cornell, NVSL)$80-120Lab-specific protective thresholdsHighly accurate; more comprehensive

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DHPP the same as DHLPP?

No. DHLPP includes Leptospirosis ('L') as a fifth component. DHPP is the core combination without Lepto. Since Leptospirosis is non-core, it is more common in endemic areas. Some manufacturers combine them; ask your vet specifically which components are in the product being used.

My dog had a vaccine reaction before. Should they still be vaccinated?

Yes, but with modifications. Dogs that have had mild reactions (facial swelling, urticaria within 30-60 minutes) can often be pre-medicated with diphenhydramine before future vaccines. Dogs with anaphylactic reactions require careful assessment by your vet of individual vaccine necessity and may be pre-treated and monitored closely. Titer testing can reduce the number of vaccines needed.

Do indoor-only dogs need vaccines?

Core vaccines (DHPP, Rabies) are still recommended for indoor-only dogs. Parvovirus can be brought in on shoes and clothing. Distemper can enter through windows or contact with wildlife. Rabies vaccination is legally required in most jurisdictions regardless of lifestyle. Non-core vaccines can often be skipped for truly indoor-only dogs.

Note: Vaccine schedules vary by region, age, lifestyle, and previous vaccine history, so confirm timing with your veterinary clinic.
