A microchip is only as useful as the registration behind it. Millions of pet microchips are implanted each year, but a significant proportion of these chips are never registered in a searchable database - or registered with a company the finder cannot easily identify. The Microchip Registry Lookup tool helps you confirm whether your pet's microchip number is properly registered, identify which registries have your pet's information, and update your contact details to ensure a lost pet can actually be returned home.

How Microchips Work

A microchip is a passive radio-frequency identification (RFID) device the size of a grain of rice, typically implanted under the skin between the shoulder blades. It contains a unique identification number (9, 10, or 15 digits depending on the standard). When scanned with an RFID reader, the chip broadcasts its number. The scanner or shelter then looks up the number in a microchip registry database to find owner contact information.

Common Microchip Registration Mistakes

  • Implanting the chip but never registering it - the chip number must be actively registered with owner contact details in a searchable database
  • Registering once and not updating when you move or change phone numbers - outdated contact info makes the chip useless
  • Registering only with the breeder or vet practice, not in a public searchable registry - internal records are not accessible to shelters and finders
  • Assuming one registration covers all registries - different registries are not automatically connected; check multiple
  • Not confirming the chip can be read after implantation - have your vet scan the chip at the next visit to confirm it is functional and readable

Frequently Asked Questions

My pet's chip came up in a search with no owner registered. What should I do?

Register immediately with at least one free registry (Found Animals is free for life) and ideally two (AAHA Universal and Found Animals). Include current address, two phone numbers, and an email. Also inform your vet to add the chip number to their clinic records.

Do microchips have GPS tracking?

No. Current pet microchips are passive RFID devices with no battery, GPS, or cellular connection. They can only be read by an RFID scanner at close range (typically within a few centimeters). GPS pet trackers are separate wearable devices (Tractive, Whistle, Fi) and are not implanted.

Note: Microchip registry results depend on the database searched and whether the owner's details are up to date.
