Guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) are among the most popular small pet mammals worldwide, loved for their gentle temperament, social nature, and relative ease of care. Despite this popularity, their biology and life stages are often poorly understood by owners. The Guinea Pig Years to Human Years Calculator converts your guinea pig's age to a meaningful human equivalent, helping you recognize which life stage they are in, anticipate age-related health needs, and provide age-appropriate care throughout their short but meaningful lifespan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do guinea pigs need companionship?

Guinea pigs are highly social animals that in the wild live in groups. Solitary guinea pigs have significantly higher cortisol levels (stress hormones), reduced immunity, and shorter lifespans than guinea pigs housed with companions. In Switzerland and Germany, it is illegal to keep a single guinea pig due to animal welfare laws recognizing their social needs. Always keep guinea pigs in pairs or small groups of same-sex animals (or neutered mixed pairs).

How do I know if my guinea pig is in pain?

Guinea pigs hide illness and pain, making them difficult to assess. Signs of pain or illness include reduced vocalization, hunched posture, reduced appetite or not eating cecotropes, weight loss (weigh weekly for early detection), teeth grinding, and reduced movement. Any guinea pig that has not eaten in 8-12 hours should be seen by a vet urgently, as GI stasis can become fatal quickly.

Note: Guinea pig age comparisons are general estimates because individual ageing can vary by care, genetics, and health.
