Hamster • Calculator / Converter

Hamsters are among the shortest-lived common pet mammals, with most species living only 2-3 years. This brief lifespan is compensated by their endearing personalities, manageable size, and low maintenance needs, but it also means that owners have a shorter window to recognize and address health changes. The Hamster Age Calculator converts your hamster's age to a human equivalent and provides species-specific guidance on what to expect at each life stage.

Frequently Asked Questions

My hamster is suddenly cold and barely breathing. Are they dead?

Hamsters can enter a state of torpor (false hibernation) if temperatures drop below approximately 60F (15C). They feel cold and stiff and breathe very slowly. To revive a hamster in torpor, hold them gently in your warm hands and allow body heat to gradually raise their temperature over 20-30 minutes. Never use a heat lamp or hot water. Keep the environment consistently warm (65-75F / 18-24C) to prevent recurrence. If unsure, contact your vet.

Can I house two Syrian hamsters together?

Absolutely not. Syrian hamsters are strictly solitary and will fight to the death if housed with another Syrian after approximately 8-10 weeks of age. Even a mother-offspring pair must be separated by weaning. Dwarf hamsters (some species) can be housed in same-sex pairs if introduced properly before 8 weeks.

Note: Hamster age comparisons are general because lifespan and ageing vary by species and individual health.
